MIAMI — At least five people were killed and five others were injured after an Amazon Prime Air cargo plane overran a runway and crashed at Miami International Airport on Sunday.
The Boeing 767-300 freighter, operated by 21 Air for Amazon, was arriving from San Juan, Puerto Rico, when it left the runway and struck several vehicles near the airport.
The crash happened shortly before 2 p.m. local time. The aircraft caught fire after the impact, prompting a major emergency response involving dozens of rescue units and firefighters.
Officials said five people were killed in the crash, while five others were injured. Three of the injured were reported to be in critical condition.
The incident temporarily disrupted operations at Miami International Airport, with flights delayed and airport operations affected as emergency crews worked at the scene.
Federal investigators are now working to determine what caused the aircraft to leave the runway. Investigators are expected to examine the plane’s landing, speed, braking system, weather conditions and maintenance history.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is leading the investigation, with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) also involved.
Amazon expressed condolences to those affected and said it would cooperate with investigators.
The cause of the crash has not yet been determined.
